Well then, they don't like you either

To each their own and all, but these people (yeah, those people) who are indifferent to animals perplex me. I mean, it's not like we're all morally obligated to own lots of pets or rescue little critters or be interested in every kind of animal. And sure, there are reasons why people might not be able to have pets in their living situation. But just not liking ANY animals, in general? Couldn't care less if they existed or not? Have you experienced this? Do you know these people? I guess I just wonder if there is some underlying reason. A couple people that I've known who have this attitude have terrible allergies, which explains why they never really got the chance to bond with an animal, but they also seemed to develop a contempt for them. Doesn't matter if it's a cat, dog, bird, turtle, koala (how can you possibly hate a koala?) etc. Like, they wouldn't hit the brakes if one was crossing the road, and wouldn't understand why a person would be upset about the loss of a family pet, and don't understand why anyone would keep them around. To me, it just seems really cold and I have to admit, it sort of changes my perception of that person. Ahem. (Points at office across the hall)
But, then again, that might be how people feel about me when I tell them I have no interest in sports.

Boyfiend used to put on this act like he hated animals. He'd say shit like, "Man spent thousands of years trying to separate themselves from animals and now you're letting them in your house?" Now he just pets the cats and likes it. He also wants a dog, although his reason for wanting one is embarrassing so I won't write it in a public place.

I don't understand them either. We always had ridiculous amounts of animals around (my father is a retired veterinarian), pets ranging from teeny mice, to an owl, snakes, dogs and cats, a turkey once, goats, sheep, and a pair of pugnacious ostriches. We had to wear a helmet around the ostriches because once they pecked one of Dad's students in the head and knocked him out. I love animals, so entertaining and comforting. I can see living life without them, but I can't imagine why anyone would want to.

I don't get that either! I think some feel that way because they never had a pet, sadly enough. I've always had animals, even owned a pet skunk! Animals bring so much, even the most quiet ones...

YOU DON'T LIKE SPORTS?!?! Wha?

That's IT. I'm never reading your blog again!

Actually, I'm very lucky to have never had a serious relationship with anyone that WAS into sports...except the Tour D'France; that, I can handle.

I don't understand it either. Sometimes it seems like animals have more humanity than lots of people I know.

i so agree with this post--what gives with people who cannot or will not realte to animals?

I can see maybe why some people don't like a certain animal, but how can they not like ALL animals? Seems really weird.

I also dislike sports. When I was younger, I swore I'd never marry any man who sat around and drank beer and watched football. I didn't stick to my principles, tho, because next month is our 20th anniversary.

I've never understood that. I definitely judge people who don't like animals and find them lacking something important.

Even more disturbing to me: This morning I was driving to work and the truck in front of me had all kinds of pro-hunting stickers on it (Calvin peeing on "gun control," deer with X's for eyes, deer behind the sighting target symbol, etc.), and one of the stickers read "if it's brown, it's down." Which at first I thought was kind of a gross toilet humor thing. Then I realized it was a gross hunter thing. Wacko.
