Get in shape, girl!

Does anyone remember the Get in Shape, Girl! craze from the 80s? Did one of you blog about this already? Well anyway, I remember it was pretty effective in making us young girls think "Excercise is FUN!" Well, fun as long as you were properly accessorized with lavender sweat bands and various pastel wrist weights. Yay, accessories! The package I had came with a cassette tape with the signature song on it and oooh, pretty ribbon on a stick thing (did that have a name?)! Anyway, if you don't know what I'm talking about check out the commercial.
So... I finally got the elliptical machine I've been thinking about getting (and procrastinating about getting) for quite awhile. I'm way overdue to get my ass in gear. It's pretty cool, I feel the burn but it's still low-impact which is good for my "old-fart legs." I used to have a somewhat decent body and I want that back! Shamefully, it's been about 10 years (since highschool gym class) that I've done anything other than walking or sex as a physical activity. Yeehaw! I know, this need for excercise comes naturally to some of you folks but for me, this is like a big thing. Woo, I'm doing something! Now if only I can be patient and stay with it even if I don't see immediate results.

I bought an elliptical machine about a year ago. So far, it's been really good for collecting dust and using as an extra coat hanger. I know, I know. I really need to get on the damn thing, but I hate to exercise! Hate it! Can't I just get skinnier because I bought the darn thing?

Ok, if HS gym was 10 years ago, you can't claim "old fart" anything.

Oh that's awesome that you got an elliptical machine. Those are pretty fun. Just do it by the TV or something.

And, I know I'm a bit older than you, but do you remember the Olivia Newton John "Let's Get Physical" phase. I think that was when headbands and legwarmers first got popular. Still I have NO idea what legwarmers are really for, maybe ice skaters or something?

I blew the dust off my treadmill and had a decent workout this morning for the first time in, oh, 2 months. Already I'm feeling better- like, instead of being on the verge of passing out at my desk from fatigue, I'm only mildly mentally cloudy. Wait, that doesn't sound like too much of an improvement...

Keep up the motivation!

I am one of those people who has exercised in one way or another my entire life. I don't do it only for vain reasons (though it does help hold back the march of time, and I am as vain as the next person), but equally because of how it makes me feel. If I slack off for a week or so, I find myself getting crabby and irritable (so hard to tell from my normal moods, I know!) and that goes away once I start up again. You may find this helps with your depression, too. The mental benefits are as good as the physical.

And ellipticals are great: easy on the joints and great fat-burners. I would suggest incorporating some weights into your routine too. That really helps. Yeah, like I'm your personal trainer now. Anyway, good luck with it all!
